Think Tank Tuesday 7/30/13: Can The Mindset of America Be Changed?

There's no question that racism in America is alive and well. There are some who would have you to believe that racism died out years ago, or that it does exist but it's so insignificant that it hardly affects anyone.

Those individuals are obviously oblivious to what's going on in this country. It always seems that people who aren't affected by something or are out of touch with an issue always seem to have an opinion and that opinion always states how things aren't so bad. That's like a man telling a woman that giving birth doesn't hurt. Having never experienced any aspect of giving birth, where would they be getting their information? The same is true with racism. Where are the people who aren't affected by racism getting their information? (I have an idea and it involves their backside.)

Consider this, in this country there are many whites whose only interaction with non-whites is in the workplace or in passing. With no close non-white friends and no non-white friends at all, where do they get their understanding of these people? The media? Books? Perhaps word of mouth from their friends? Stereotypes? You can see where I'm going with this. When you don't step outside your comfort zone to investigate other cultures you can only rely on what you're told which is always laced with someone's bias and runs the risk of being inaccurate information.

As a youth I've had the pleasure of experiencing first hand various cultures, which allowed me to   form my own opinions and dispel many of the myths and stereotypes I've come across over the years; and as a result I have friends -- close friends from all walks of life.

So the Think Tank question for today is very simple, can the mindset of America be changed, or is it a lost cause?

Here's a glimmer of hope in the form of a positive video by Youtube user Chris Beasley:

WTF Files: Negligent mom Brittany Harris Leaves Kids In Car For Hours While At Concert

Just another episode of people losing their everlasting minds! How in the world do you leave your kids in the car for 3 hours while you enjoy yourself at a concert?

I can't wrap my mind around this one...

[Brittany Harris, 25, was arrested Saturday night after a Cruzan Ampitheater employee found her children, aged five and three, standing alone near a black Nissan Altima in the South Florida Fairgrounds parking lot, surrounded by 'intoxicated persons'. In his police statement, employee Barry Batchelor said he noticed the kids hanging around unsupervised at about 7pm and approached them at 9.45pm when they were still alone. Batchelor said the children told them their mother 'went into the concert and left them to stay in the car,' according to Smoking Gun.

He then took the children to a venue gate, where he turned them over to sheriff’s deputies. Police found Harris, a hip hop model also known as 'Pretty Red', in the parking lot about 10.30pm when the concert ended. After first insisting her cousin had brought her children to the fairgrounds, Harris 'confessed that she came here and left the kids to stay in the car so she could watch the concert', Smoking Gun reported. Harris was charged with two counts of child neglect, with child welfare officers reportedly ordered to take possession of the children. She is currently in Palm Beach County jail in lieu of a $20,000 bail.]source: dailymail.co.uk

Teen Finds 5 Year Old Abducted Girl

These are the type of news stories I prefer to hear especially amidst the heightened emotions surrounding the not guilty verdict of the Trayvon Martin case. The media is flooded with images of people of color rioting and committing various crimes because of the verdict which further perpetuates the negative images of people of color.

Black people need to stop and think for a moment. There are some people in this country whose only knowledge of people of color comes from images portrayed in the media and entertainment. Brief hellos in the workplace are the only real interactions they have with people of different walks of life. It's human nature to fear what's different, and when these people see the rioting, looting, and senseless acts of violence on random people done by people of color, it all only solidifies the negative images that are already formed in their minds.

Hopefully, after reading this news story will shatter a few of the stereotypes and negative images of black people embedded in some people's minds.

[Manheim Township police said Thursday night that two teenage boys who were on bicycles and helping to look for the girl spotted a maroon or burgundy sedan on Betz Farm Drive around 6:50 p.m. The vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet, had round tail lights and was driven by a man of unknown race, aged 50 to 70, according to police.

The boys saw a young girl inside the vehicle who matched the description of Rojas, so they began following the car, authorities said. The vehicle stopped in the 1700 block of Betz Farm Drive and the girl got out. Police said the man drove off as search crews arrived in the area.

Lancaster Township fire Chief Ron Comfort said the girl was OK, but was "scared and looking for her mom." She was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Manheim Township police Lt. Robert Baldwin said Thursday night she had no obvious injuries.]source:http://lancasteronline.com

WTF Files: Cop Sexually Assaults Minor

Talk about a disturbingly sick story...

[Peter Ciollo, a 29-year-old New York Police Department officer, has been charged with attempted rape, giving alcohol to a child, endangering the welfare of a child and sexual abuse.

He allegedly gave her alcohol before letting her drive his car in the parking lot of the Staten Island Mall and around the neighborhood, police sources told the New York Post.
They then returned to his home and he showed her pornography before kissing her and urging her to remove her shirt, the New York Daily News reported.

He then allegedly took her to bed and began touching her, sources said.
The girl said she doesn't remember what happened next, but she told police that when she woke up, she was in the bed and Ciollo's wife had walked in on them.
Sources told the Post that the encounter may have started out as consensual but 'eventually went too far'. The age of consent in New York is 17.

Ciollo was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.
He has been suspended from his position with the 120th Precinct of the NYPD, where he has worked for seven years. The suspension is without pay.] source: dailymail.co.uk

Think Tank Tuesday 7/9/13: Cheating Husbands And Their Mistresses, Who's To Blame?

After last night's episode of ratchet-piece theater Love & Hip Hop Atlanta Twitter went crazy. Seemed like everyone was trying to give Kirk Frost a piece of their mind for cheating on his pregnant wife with local aspiring rapper "Mary Jane." (For the uninitiated, Kirk Frost is married to Atlanta rap artist Rasheeda, and was seen getting rubbed up and tongued down by Mary Jane and another woman on last night's episode.) One woman explained how she'd 'Lorena Bobbitt' Kirk ... in oh so many words.

Mobs of angry viewers took to Twitter to give Kirk the business, while slapping a "home wrecker" label on Mary Jane for knowingly going after a married man.

Mary Jane fired back at her haters with the following tweet:

A little known secret to those outside of Atlanta is that 'man sharing' runs rampant in the city because of the lopsided ratio of women to men which was believed to be something like 10 women for every 1 single man a couple of years ago.

The Think Tank Tuesday question for today is who is to blame for breaking up the happy and not so happy homes, the cheating husband or the mistresses that purposely target married men?

Definitely a discussion for the water cooler! Want to see more of Mary Jane? Check out this trailer:

"Big Brother" Scandal Is Good For America

The internet has been going nuts over comments made by cast members that weigh heavy in the highly inappropriate and insensitive departments. Cast members Aaryn Gries and GinaMarie Zimmerman lost their jobs because of the things they said. So what did they say that was so bad? Glad you asked, click here to view the colorful comments.

According to Today.com, "The offenses include frequent use of the N-word and gay slurs by more than one contestant and much more. Some of the most shocking comments so far have come from what's shaping up to be this season's 'Mean Girls' clique, made up of Aaryn Gries and GinaMarie Zimmerman."

Ready for the kicker? None of this was seen on TV. Only viewers watching the live-feed via the "Big Brother" website were able to see the madness, leaving people wondering why wasn't it shown on TV? Perhaps the comments were too 'real' for the show's producers, or maybe they were planning on sweeping the controvesy under the rug like so many others do in this country. So far CBS has remained quiet on the matter. Whatever the case, one thing is for sure, this stuff needs to be televised!

Society loves to hide its problems as if denying them will make them go away. Some even venture to say that there is no more racism or sexism; either they're uninformed or the the ones who are committing the racist or sexist acts.

By now you're probably wondering how could something as vile as racial slurs, sexist remarks and hate speech be good for America? It's good because it shines light on what's typically kept in the dark. The comments of a few is suddenly understood to be the representation of a sample of the larger population who share the same or similar views in regards to equal rights, race, and homosexuals.

This situation has brought awareness to problems that exist in America that need to be addressed, and the first step in addressing any problem is to acknowledge one exists. So while this controversy will get people talking, we need to make sure the right conversation is taking place, and the uninformed are being correctly educated. The only true way to battle hate is with love and proper education.

Think Tank Tuesday: Did Megan Good Show Too Much Skin For A "Preacher's Wife?"

The internet has certainly been buzzing about actress Megan Good's dress she wore at the 2013 BET Awards show. She rocked an ultra low cut blue number that's got the Christian community in an uproar, with backsliders others in full support of her choice of dress. Check out Hello Beautiful for the story and Beautiful on Facebook for the explosive comments.

According to the Bible, "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9) So today's Think Tank Tuesday question is:

Can a pastor's wife wear revealing clothing and still identify as a Christian?
