Think Tank Tuesday 12/30/14: Are We Ready For Male Birth Control?

Women around the world prepare to sigh a sigh of relief as 2017 is projected to be the year when the tables are turned on who will be responsible for birth control -- condomless birth control that is. Just think, no more side effects from pills or weird devices inserted into your bodies. When this new break through in birth control comes to fruition, cheers from ladies will be heard around the globe. They'll cheer because the burden of birth control will belong primarily to the man, and things like irregular cycles, bad skin, etc., will be a thing of the past:

[According to a press release from the Parsemus Foundation, a not-for profit organization focused on developing low-cost medical approaches, Vasalgel is proving effective in a baboon study. Three lucky male baboons were injected with Vasalgel and given unrestricted sexual access to 10 to 15 female baboons each. Despite the fact that they have been monkeying around for six months now, no female baboons have been impregnated. With the success of this animal study and new funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Parsemus Foundation is planning to start human trials for Vasalgel next year. According to their FAQ page, they hope to see it on the market by 2017 for, in their words, less than the cost of a flat-screen television.

So how does Vasalgel work? It is essentially a reimagining of a medical technology called RISUG (reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance) that was developed by a doctor named Sujoy Guha over 15 years ago in India, where it has been in clinical trials ever since. Unlike most forms of female birth control, Vasalgel is non-hormonal and only requires a single treatment in order to be effective for an extended period of time. Rather than cutting the vas deferens—as would be done in a vasectomy—a Vasalgel procedure involves the injection of a polymer contraceptive directly into the vas deferens. This polymer will then block any sperm that attempt to pass through the tube. At any point, however, the polymer can be flushed out with a second injection if a man wishes to bring his sperm back up to speed.source
You can bet your bottom dollar men who've been complaining about using condoms will celebrate when this hits the market! Married men and single men alike will join hands and sing Kumbaya as they wave farewell to the "rhythm method" and condoms -- but not so fast single fellas!
While your married peers can freely indulge in condomless romps with their significant other you'll still have to strap up for protection because the male birth control doesn't protect against STDs.

What are your thoughts? Is this development long overdue? How will men react to being the one responsible for birth control?

Think Tank Tuesday 12/9/14: Hollywood's Whitewashing of 'Exodus'

I have to admit I've never been a big fan of biblical movies. The fact is they're never completely accurate and as a student of the Bible I don't like folks tampering with Bible stories. I'm well aware of creative liberties writers take to make stories more appealing for the big screen, but some of those creative liberties go a little too far when they include inaccuracies and total fabrications that compromise the integrity of the story.

For example, Cecil B. Demille's classic The Ten Commandments starring Charleton Heston and Yul Brynner there's a scene where Joshua ventures to the land of Midian to persuade Moses to go back to Egypt to help his people. According to the Bible it was God who told Moses "...go, return into Egypt..." (Exodus 4:19). This tiny change is significant because it shifts the importance from God to Moses. Essentially it would make the story of the Exodus about a man (Moses) saving himself and his people because of his own will, instead of what it really is about -- God liberating his people via Moses who is a type of Christ in the story, symbolic of Jesus. Little changes like that may mean absolutely nothing to non-believers and simple entertainment seekers, but to believers adding a little here and/or taking away a little there can have tremendous effects on the underlying principles contained in the stories.

When people are in an uproar about how Hollywood made all of the prominent people in Exodus: Gods and Kings white and the undesirable people black it really didn't shock me at all. When it comes to biblical movies made in Hollywood one thing is for sure, something won't be right to say the least. I did find it ironic to have white people playing the main roles when in the Bible the first mentioning of white skin was in the book of Exodus where Moses first meets God. In Exodus 4:7 God tells Moses to put his hand into his bosom and when he took it out , "...behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow." The second mentioning (equally ironic) was as a punishment to Miriam the sister of Moses because she and her other brother Aaron talked against Moses for marrying an Ethiopian woman, and as a result Miriam was turned leprous "white as snow." Perhaps the writers overlooked those points. Check out this excerpt from an article featured on Mashable.com about the flick:

[The uproar against this film has been dragging on for months on end, initially because of the film's cast list. The movie stars carrying this film — Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton (if he can be called a "star" yet), Sigourney Weaver and Aaron Paul — are all white, as are most of the male supporting cast with speaking roles (save for Ben Kingsley, who is half-Indian).

In contrast, aside from Weaver, most of the main actresses with speaking roles — Hiam Abbass, Maria Valverde, Golshifteh Farahani and Indira Varma, mainly — are non-white, which might be the film's only saving grace in terms of racial casting ... When the initial casting for the film ignited uproar, it was because dark-skinned actors were cast as servants, soldiers, assassins — you get the idea. Going into this film, I remained open-minded — perhaps Scott had been unfairly vilified in the film's early reports. Instead, I was slapped in the face with racist imagery.

Within the first few minutes of the film, two black actors are shown, but they're merely servants to the high priestess (played by Varma). The next few times you see dark-skinned people, it's essentially the same — they're the ever-present bodyguards of Ramses, the wicked assassin sent to kill Moses. They're servants who flit in and out of rooms.

Dark-skinned people in this film are treated like furniture, scattered in the background like props. They are mute (I can count on one hand how many times a dark-skinned actor speaks, and that's being generous). It's a visual representation of the statistic that only 25.9% of speaking characters in 600 films from 2007-2010 and 2012-2013 were minorities.

Hollywood has been a racist institution for  decades with absolutely no signs of changing anytime soon. Should we really be looking to a racist institution for accurate portrayals of people of color in its films? Isn't it way past time for people of color to abandon the Hollywood machine to establish their own where accurate portrayals of their people can be brought to film? What are your thoughts?

Think Tank Tuesday 12/2/14: Why Are Children Brides Legal?

I don't know (and don't want to know) what a grown man could ever see in a 14 year old little girl that would make him want her for his bride. To me any man who would marry a child is a sick S.O.B. and should be locked away forever; and parents who would willingly give their child to be married or force them to marry an adult should be locked away too.

No matter what your thoughts on marriage is (between a man and a woman, a man and a man, a woman and a woman), we can agree marriage should occur between two consenting adults. Imagine being a 14 year old who is suddenly forced to give up your childhood because you're forced to marry someone don't love and to make things worse that person is an adult. That's exactly what happened to Wasilat Tasi'u, check out her story below:

[The father of a 14-year-old child bride accused of murdering her husband said Thursday he was appealing to a Nigerian court to spare his daughter the death sentence. Wasilat Tasi'u is on trial for the murder of her 35-year-old husband, Umar Sani, who died after eating food that Tasi'u allegedly laced with rat poison. "We are appealing to the judge to consider Wasilat's plea," her father, Isyaku Tasi'u, told The Associated Press on Thursday.

On Wednesday witnesses told the High Court in Gezawa, a town 60 miles outside Nigeria's second largest city of Kano, that Tasi'u killed her husband two weeks after their wedding in April. Three others allegedly died after eating the poisoned meal. The prosecution, led by Lamido Soron-Dinki, senior state council from the Kano State Ministry of Justice, is seeking the death penalty.

The case calls into question the legality of trying a 14-year-old for murder under criminal law and the rights of child brides, who are common in the poverty-stricken, predominantly Muslim northern Nigeria region. "She was married to a man that she didn't love. She protested but her parents forced her to marry him," Zubeida Nagee, a women's rights activist in Kano, told AP. Nagee and other activists have written a letter of protest to the Kano state deputy governor.] Read the full story here!
