Think Tank Tuesday 3/22: Should Blacks Forget About Reparations?

Reparations for the descendants of African slaves has always been a hot topic especially in the black community. On one hand some that feel black people should be awarded reparations for the atrocities that occurred during the slave trade in America that have had a ripple effect in the black community, and on the other hand you have some who think the government will never seriously consider reparations for blacks let alone issuing it to them.

To make matters even more complex, the type of compensatory amends to be issued can't be agreed upon. Some think financial compensation will better help blacks while others think receiving land like reservations granted to Native Americans would better help the black community.

What are your thoughts? Should blacks finally be given reparations for the atrocities occurring during the African slave trade? Is it fair that other groups of people have received reparations yet has never been considered for the descendants of African slaves? What should be done about it if anything? If reparations were to be distributed to black people what form would best help blacks to build their communities -- money, free college, land, etc.?

Think Tank Tuesday 3/15: Summer Camp Used As KKK Recruitment Tool

[According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Robb has been the KKK’s “national director” since the 1980s. The website for the camp, which can be accessed through the national events section of the KKK website, claims that white people “are facing genocide,” and that, “never before in the history of our people have we faced a challenge so threatening.” The site also claims that there is a “world-wide rebellion against our people,” and that, “there are few who have the courage to stand before the abyss and point the way to our racial redemption.”

Classes that will be conducted during the camp will focus on increasing participation and recruitment for the white nationalist movement by, “establishing white consciousness in a modern society,” and teaching students how to use propaganda effectively. Children as young as 16 are allowed to enroll in the camp as long as a parent or legal guardian submits a notarized, signed letter of permission.

Another summer camp being run by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which has strong ties to the KKK and other hate groups. The Sam Davis Youth Camp is billed as a place where children will be taught “Southern history and culture,” that denounces the notion that, “great American heroes like Jefferson Davis and General Robert Lee…were evil, hate-mongering slave-holders.”

It is estimated that hundreds of teenagers from all over the American South attend Confederate camps held in several states, including South Carolina, where Confederate-sympathizing racist Dylann Roof gunned down nine Black people in a historic Black church.] source

Think Tank Tuesday 3/8: 16 Year Old Female Beaten In Police Custody

A 16 year old girl was brutally beaten while in police custody.

Kulturekritic.com reports:

[CCTV surveillance footage obtained by NOLA.com through a public records request shows New Orleans Police Officer Terrance Saulny using what authorities are referring to as “unauthorized force” on a 16-year-old girl as she was standing in a holding cell. Following an investigation by the Public Integrity Bureau, Saulny was fired after video evidence of the beating emerged, and Saulny was found to have lied to investigators by claiming he had not made vulgar comments to the teenagers.

The video, which was released by the Independent Police Monitor’s Office, does not contain audio, but it does show Saulny entering the teenage girl’s cell after and giving her directives before shoving her against a wall and striking her repeatedly with a pair of four-point restraints as he takes her to the ground. Once the girl was on the ground, another officer enters the cell and helps place handcuffs on her.

The girl sustained injuries that eventually required eye surgery and is currently still detained in a juvenile detention center in Shreveport. Despite an investigation by the FBI, New Orleans Police Department spokesman Tyler Gamble reports that there was not enough probable cuase to send the case to the Orleans Parish District Attorney for possible criminal charges against Saulny.

Entertainment Junk: Will Smith's Writing Team Whiter Than Oscars?

When Jada-Pinkett Smith first announced earlier this year that she would be boycotting the Oscars this year due to the lack of nominations of people of color, a lot of black people supported her stance. Her hubby Will Smith being one, chose to also boycott the Oscars for the same reason.
Yep Jada and Will checked Hollywood on its lack of diversity in film; but now someone is checking the checkers.

In the below video Mr. Roosevelt Mitchell III says the Oscars wasn't the only thing so white, and all roads lead to -- Will Smith's writing team -- doh.  Check out the video:

Think Tank Tuesday 3/1: Drug Dealer, But Adorable?

When a person is arrested for drug trafficking and caught with all kinds of drugs and paraphernalia there's a plethora of names they can be called, but adorable is the last one you'd probably think would be used. Shockingly (yet not surprising) that's exactly how blog site Death and Taxes described 19 year old alleged drug peddler Sarah Furay.

To be exact they called her an 'adorable drug kingpin'  but what makes her adorable instead of a monster like other drug dealers who push death in the form of pills and powder? I have an idea, here's a hint it's not her smile.

The NYDailyNews.com reports:

[Police cuffed Sarah Furay on Nov. 6 after officers said they found 31 grams of cocaine, 126 grams of high-grade marijuana, 29 "ecstasy" tablets, methamphetamine and 60 doses of an LSD-like drug in her bedroom, according to the College Station Police Department.

The cops found packaging material, two digital scales and a handwritten drug price list in the bedroom in addition to the drug cache, cops said. Furay’s phone also showed “numerous texts” with her peddling coke, MDMA, acid, weed and other drugs, according to the court documents.

At a time in this country when men and women of color are receiving shockingly lengthy prison sentences for possessing minuscule amounts of drugs for personal use, this is both insulting and infuriating. Should people be using illegal drugs? Absolutely not. If caught with illegal drugs should prison time be issued? Certainly, but the time should fit the crime. Users should in no way receive the same or longer sentences than dealers, and no matter how adorable some may find this little powder and pill pushing "princess" she deserves the same amount of time as her drug dealing peers with darker skin tones.

What are your thoughts? If little white Sally Sue commits the same crime as little black Aliyah, should they get the same amount of time? Why are white criminals perceived differently than criminals of color?
