Motivational Mondays: The Man In The Mirror

Happy Monday everyone! As we say goodbye to 2012 let's take a moment to reflect on the lessons (good and bad) we've learned from 2012. Going forward we should have some strategies in place that will help us to not make the same mistakes in 2013. May God bless you all and as a little gift to take you into the New Year here's a motivational message from Eric Thomas:

Smash or Trash: 12/11/12

Unsigned Greats presents....
SMASH or TRASH
-----------------------------------------------
So many people hit me off with their projects I thought it would only be fair to share their material and have it critiqued by my readers. My only warning is there may or may not be some extremely wack stuff here, but on the other hand you might come across the next big thing, so be patient and fair. After you check things out, let me know what you think. Leave a comment below, or send me a tweet letting me know if the project is a smash or if it's trash. Then go let the artist know and tell them Big Jye sent ya! The whole point is to give the artists some feedback on their work. Let's go!

Think Tank Tuesdays: Wayward Children...Who's To Blame?

Who's to blame for today's youth? They're disrespectful, out of control, stubborn, and to put it frankly a disgrace. Of course those aren't accurate descriptions of all of today's youth but is a segment in society who live up to that description. So who's fault is it? Can we blame music videos, ultra violence movies, music that glorifies sex, drugs, and violence? Or is it solely the fault of parents? Check out the video below:

My theory is the finger can be pointed in many directions, but not as the sole cause of this problem. We can point the finger at the government because when it stepped into the family circle and chipped away at a parent's authority to discipline (not to be confused with abuse) their children, things started to fall apart. We can definitely point the finger at music videos with scantly dressed women and men portraying a lifestyle that promotes, promiscuity, drug culture and violence as a way of life while they dictate to impressionable minds that you can't be anything if you don't have an abundance of money. We can surely point the fingers at the parents who have failed their children miserably either by abandonment or raising them improperly. While all play some part in this complex problem I don't think any one issue is the sole reason why our youth have gone astray. Just look at this story of a young African boy who didn't allow poverty to keep him down.

Sentenced To 12 Years For Self Defense

Can you imagine being jumped by 7 or 8 guys who are yelling racial slurs at you, getting kicked and beaten while you're on the ground and then when the whole fiasco is over YOU have to spend 12 years behind bars?

Pretty crazy right? Well check out this story about a brother who despite what the facts of the story are, has been locked up for quite some time.

[While Brandon helped his employer move furniture at her house in Jackson, N.J., he allegedly noticed that a fight had broken out at a party across the street. After walking toward the altercation to investigate the melee, one of the individuals involved, who is said to have been visibly intoxicated along with the raucous group, began fighting with him.
According to Gloria, Brandon quickly shut the aggressor down and attempted to return to the house he came from.
But that would be just the beginning.
The aggressor — now allegedly armed with 7 to 8 other White males in tow — followed Brandon and then reportedly began stomping and kicking him while yelling, “Kill the n*gger!”
According to Gloria, Brandon pulled out his 3-inch work pocket knife in self-defense, forcing the group back, but it was the homeowner’s call to police that would finally force the motley group to stand down.
On the police report, even though the officer would list the incident as a “racial offense” and Brandon would sustain injuries to the back of his head and knees and even had a fingernail bitten off, he would later be the only one charged with aggravated assault and illegal weapons possession.

Slick Rick Gets Booed

I'm not sure what happened but Slick Rick's half time performance at the Barclay Center during the Knicks vs the Nets game was a far cry from his past performances. It lacked energy, entertainment value and sounded like trash. Not sure what's up with that but check out the video:

There was some speculation about the poor sound quality causing Slick Rick's performance to suffer. I'm inclined to go with that explanation (because it's reasonable and I just like Slick Rick.) Check out another Slick Rick performance where the sound is great and he seems to be a bit livelier -- maybe he should have performed with Busta Rhymes at the Barclays Center....just sayin:

Think Tank Tuesday: When Brown people think they are White

This Think Tank Tuesday poses the question 'who are you?' meaning what is your heritage. In the video below Spanish speaking people are asked which race they identify themselves with, White, Black, Asian or Native American. Their responses may or may not surprise you. Check out the video below.

"Most of peoples in the so called Latin America are of Indigenous (Native) and African heritages, and the mix of both with others including Europeans, Asian, Arab, etc. But we ignore our true heritage, due to the Euro-centric educational system and a racist corporate media. We prefer to say we are White instead of accepting our true heritages, because for many is painful and even shameful to remember who we are." source: youtube.com

What Are You Doing To Change The World?

Everyone loves to complain about the problems in society and the world, but only a handful of those same people are willing to do something about those problems. Many complain yet offer no solutions, and many complain but aren't willing to try to find solutions to the problem. A famous quote by Mahatma Ghandi states, "be the change you want to see in the world."

That's exactly what 15 year old Malala Yousafzai did. She wanted to see young girls like herself going to school to get an education in Pakistan. While at school, a Taliban gunman shot her at point blank range. There is currently a petition on change.org to nominate Malala for the Nobel Peace Prize click here to learn more about Malala and the petition.

Malala risked her life to change her world for the better, what are you doing to change yours?

Meet Afghanistan's 1st Female Rapper

Soosan Firooz may be one of the bravest females around. She probably has one of the most dangerous jobs in the world -- she's a rap artist from Afghanistan; a country notorious for its incredibly harsh views towards women.

The odds are certainly stacked up against her, she's a female rapping in public going against the current ideology of women's position in her country. A further break down shows the severity of the risk she is taking.

Performing in public is a big no no for females and rap is viewed as rebellious music (with the exception of the bubble gum rap plaguing the airwaves today), rap has always been a way for artists to report what's going on in their community and provides a platform for people to go against the system. Whether police brutality, government corruption, etc., rap music has always been the CNN of the streets. Then you have probably her biggest offense -- speaking out against the forced subjugation of women in Afghanistan. Needless to say this young lady needs our support and prayers.
["Rap does not have to be angry," Soosan Firooz said. She uses it to express painful childhood memories of being a civil war refugee and sees rap as a medium through which she can defy the repression of women. In her first music video recently released on YouTube, Firooz appeared in Western style clothing and jewelry – headscarf notably absent. But pushing the envelope and breaking from Afghanistan's conservative cultural norms does not come without a price. Some members of her family have disowned her and she has faced numerous death threats. Her father quit his job so that he can protect her around the clock.]source: worldnews.nbcnews.com

The final image was made possible with the help of Adelaide body paint artist Emma Hack. The shoot took a total of 18 hours, using 17 men and women -- each with up to five layers of paint applied to their bodies.] source: youtube.com
